Vedic Scriptures

Vedas

There are 4 Vedas in Hinduism namely Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharveda.

 

Brahamns

These divine scriptures give the explainations of the vedic hymes. There are many Brahamns related to each vedas.

Rigveda: Aitareya and Kaushitaki

Yajurveda: Taittiriya and Satapatha

Samaveda: Jemineya and Panchvish

Atharveda: Gopatha 

Aranyaks

Meaning of the word 'Aranya' is forest. They provide guidance to especially hermits and student living in forest so these text were named as Aranyaks.

Upanishadas

There are 108 upanishadas which focuses on right knowledge. They criticise rituals or Karmakanda. The word Upanishada means the knowledge (vidya) learned by sitting near a realised teacher(Guru). The Brihadaranyaka upanishada is the oldest one. They are also known as the Vedanta.

Smritis

Emanate rules and regulations of vedic life. Some of them are Manusmriti(the first srmiti), Naradasmriti, Yajnavalkyasmriti and Parasharasmriti.

Vedangas 

In order to understand the divine Vedas correctly, it's essential to study the Vedangas. So, it is also called the limbs of Vedas. The 6 Vedangas are namely:

- Shiksha (Pronounciation)

- Kalpa (Rituals)

- Vyakaran (Grammar)

- Nirukta (Etymology)

- Chhanda (Metrics)

- Jyotish (Astrology)

Puranas

They are elaborated explainations of the Vedas which deals with the creation of universe, the geneology of rishis and royal dynasties. There are 18 puranas. Most famous is the SrimadBhagvat mahaPurana and the oldest is the Matsya Purana.

Darshana

There are 6 major philosophy in Hinduism called Shada-Darshana. They are listed below with there originators.

Nyaya Darshana              -           Gautam

Vaishesika Darshana       -            Kanda Rishi

Sankhya Darshana          -           Kapila

Yoga Darshana                 -           Patanjali

Purva Mimansa                -          Jaimini

Uttar Mimansa                 -          Badrayna or Vyasa

Upavedas

There 4 Upavedas:-

Epics

There are two main epics in sanatan dharm, the Ramayana (29,000 verses) of Valmiki and the Mahabharata (1,00,000 verses) of Ved- Vyas. The Mahabharata is also called Satasahasri Samhita.
